Iranian Missiles in Venezuela

Iran Placing Medium-Range Missiles in Venezuela; Can Reach the U.S.

The die Welt story this is based on is more than 2 weeks old, how come the US media hasn’t picked this up yet?

Thanks to commenter AJay for the tip.

I don’t trust Obama on this, but the new Congress will be able to impose further sanctions against these two countries. I don’t see them declaring war on Venezuela though. Two questions:

1) If Obama wanted to stop this, what should he do?
2) If he doesn’t care, what should Congress do?

My main worry is that Obama’s legalism will make him try to deal with this through the UN, instead of directly. A country gets to judge whether there is a threat against it without having to get UN approval. We probably have some time before Iran has warheads, but I don’t have a good estimate of how much.

Doesn’t anyone think this story is worth a comment?

What do you want me to say? That I hope they pull it off? 🙂

I asked two specific questions in the post. What should Obama do, and what should Congress do. You showed in your comment on the other thread that you are capable of recognizing that even though you want America weakened, for Obama to do it would be traitorous; therefore I know you can put yourself in his shoes, or those of Congress, and interpret the “should” in my questions in terms of their duty rather than your preferences. :p

Polymath, considering that the US isn’t at war with Iran, I could let them do it without being a traitor. But yes, if I swore allegiance to America, I’d have to uphold my oath. What I’d do is tell Venezuela that if they don’t tell Iran off, I will blockade them.

Hugo Chavez is either crazy, paranoid or really evil. And he’s trying to start a war. The Iranians would never have thought of this themselves if Hugo hadn’t suggested it to them.

I say just be ready for it. Keep taking pictures. If the Iranians build a base, destroy it with a precision strike. If Venezuela tries to stop us, destroy their air force and air defence capabilities. American air-power is so far beyond superior to anything anyone else has, it could probably be done with no casualities to the US and minimal damage done to Venezuela. I don’t think Russia would intervene, it would be too risky for them.

In such matters, Congress follows the lead of the President.

If Obama is pragmatic, he’ll keep his eyes peeled, but avoid direct confrontation until Iran provides a casus belli.

I thinking picking a fight now would be anti-productive and achieve nothing. Better to let the Iranians and Chavez think they’re getting away with it, then hit ’em hard.

Speak softly, and carry a big stick.

Even with advanced air-defence systems from Russia, the US should be able to deal with them easily.

In “Desert Storm” American stealth fighters and bombers destroyed Iraqi radar and air-defence capabilities within minutes of the commencement of hostilities. Once blind, conventional fighters poured in and annihilated the Iraqi air force.

With no air-cover, a convetional army and navy are useless, as the rest of “Desert Storm” showed. And in this instance, US objectives would be limited. No invasion, so no threat of guerilla war (which we would probably win, anyways, since Venezuela is no Afghanistan). Simply destroying a few select targets.

More on Chavez’s progress towards dictatorship:

    Hugo Chavez: CommuNazi

The question is not whether Chavez will succeed in obtaining absolute power in Venezuela, it doesn’t look like anybody is going to stop him. The question is, once he gets there, will he plunge Venezuela into Castro-style totalitarian misery and threaten other countries, or will he just be an ordinary corrupt caudillo who will eventually get his head handed to him in a coup or democratic revolution?
